Elon’s Performing Arts Department cancels spring productions

The difficult decision comes amid widespread efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19 that include limiting public gatherings.

The Department of Performing Arts announced Tuesday, March 17, the cancellation of its spring season, including five department-led theater and dance productions as well as all student-led and class performances.

The decision was reached in coordination with the Elon Emergency Operations Center and the university’s senior administration, Performing Arts Department Chair Lauren Kearns said.

“While we are all disappointed, we are confident this decision is the right one. It is consistent with what other cultural and educational institutions across the nation are doing. We want to do our part to flatten the curve of COVID-19 and ensure the health and safety of our community,” Kearns wrote in a message on the department’s website.

Remaining performances this spring included music theater revue “Grand Night,” plays “Hamlet,” and “Violet,” the senior dance thesis concert, improvisational comedy shows by Instant Laughter, and a number of other student-led and class-based productions.
