A native of Dartmouth, Massachusetts, Barthelmes is a member of the women's track and field team and has posted a 3.65 grade-point-average as an engineering major with a minor in computer science and mathematics. Borucki, from Marlton, New Jersey, is a catcher on the baseball team who is double majoring in physics and computer science, with a 3.47 GPA.
Skylar Barthelmes ’20 of the Elon University women’s track and field team and Mike Borucki ’20 of the Elon baseball team have been recognized by the Colonial Athletic Association as Institutional Scholar-Athlete award winners for the Phoenix.
A native of Dartmouth, Massachusetts, Barthelmes has posted a 3.65 grade-point-average as an engineering major with a minor in computer science and mathematics. She has been named to the CAA Commissioner’s Honor Roll seven times while also being a member of the Dean’s and President’s List as well as the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. Barthelmes has also served as the vice president of Elon University’s Engineering Club since 2017.
This past indoor season, Barthelmes broke her own school-record in the weight throw, tossing a personal-best mark of 58′ 4″ (17.78m) at the Liberty Kickoff on Jan. 24. She also set a new personal-best throw of 44′ 4.25″ (13.52m) in the shot put at the JDL January College Kickoff, winning the event. She closed out her indoor season with a toss of 58′ 1″ (17.70m) in the weight throw at the ECAC Indoor Championships.
Barthelmes was also a three-time All-CAA performer in outdoor track and field. She collected all-league honors in 2017 and 2019 in the javelin throw, setting a personal-record with a heave of 142′ 0″ (43.29m) at the league meet. She also received All-CAA honors in 2019 in the hammer throw after setting a school-record in the event with a throw of 180′ 11″ (55.14m) at the CAA Championships.
A senior catcher from Marlton, New Jersey, Borucki is a physics and computer science double major and owns a 3.47 GPA. He has been named to the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll and the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for all seven semesters he has been at Elon, and earned Dean’s List in the fall and spring of 2019.
Borucki spent the summer of 2018 as a data science Intern with American Water Works, and was a software engineering intern with The Boeing Co. this past summer. He also spends time reading to local elementary school students and volunteers with the Miracle League Baseball Game.
In November, Borucki and the rest of the Phoenix baseball team went to the Dominican Republic as a part of Elon’s commitment to students achieving a global education. While there, the team put on a clinic for local youth players, painted a dorm for an MLB youth academy, and participated in English lessons with the academy players.
Borucki also teamed up with Elon football’s Matt Foster to engineer an active transdermal drug delivery design intended to treat nicotine addiction. The pair received a provisional U.S. patent in January 2019 and is seeking a permanent utility patent. Individually, Borucki is also developing a smartphone application that will control the administration of nicotine and other drugs in order to limit addiction and help the user quit.
UNCW men’s tennis player Daniel Groom was chosen as the conference’s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as voted on by the CAA’s Academic Affairs Committee.
Hofstra’s Laura Masciullo was named the league’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The CAA’s Academic Affairs Committee voted on the award.
Each of the CAA’s 10 institutions had a nominee for the CAA Female Scholar‐Athlete of the Year and they will be recognized with a crystal award.
