Published in June by the Association of College & Research Libraries, “The Engaged Library: High-Impact Educational Practices in Academic Libraries” features contributions from several Elon librarians and teaching faculty.
Joan Ruelle, dean of the Carol Grotnes Belk Library has edited and co-authored a new book titled “The Engaged Library: High-Impact Educational Practices in Academic Libraries” and published June 2020 by the Association of College & Research Libraries.
According to George Kuh and the Association of American Colleges and Universities, high-impact educational practices are recognized as “activities that promote student engagement, student retention, and positive student learning outcomes.” “The Engaged Library” provides case studies, examples, and discussion on how academic libraries can create successful partnerships to contribute to the integration of high-impact practices on their campuses, and ways to execute these practices well.
The book includes chapters co-authored by several Elon librarians and teaching faculty. Each chapter discusses one of the ten original high-impact practices through perspectives of library partnerships, contributions, and opportunities, and provides examples of outcomes assessment. Across all of the chapters and case studies are examples of practices that rely on instructional teams of faculty, advisers, librarians, and technology professionals to enhance and deepen the practices’ impact on student learning.
Elon personnel who have contributed to the book are Joan Ruelle, Dean of the Carol Grotnes Belk Library; Deandra Little, Assistant Provost and Director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning and Professor of English; Shannon Lundeen, Director of Academic-Residential Partnerships and Associate Professor of Philosophy; Paula Patch, Senior Lecturer in English; Patrick Rudd, Coordinator of Library Instruction and Outreach Services and Assistant Librarian; Vicki Siler, Electronic Resources Librarian and Assistant Librarian; Shannon Tennant, Coordinator of Library Collections and Associate Librarian; Dianne Ford, Coordinator of Library Electronic Resources and Associate Librarian Emerita; and Teresa LePors, Coordinator of Library Research and Scholarly Services and Associate Librarian.
