Landscaping, turf management win safety award

Landscaping and Grounds and Turf Management has won the second Physical Plant Shop Safety Award. The quarterly award was established to emphasize safe work habits and promote a safe work environment. Each quarter, employees from the winning shop receive a gift from the university in recognition of their safety record, and the shop will receive a plaque for display.

The four Physical Plant shops compete for the award. A safety score for each shop will be calculated through a formula that accounts for safe hours worked, number of accidents and a building safety inspection. Landscaping and Grounds and Turf Management won the award for the most recent quarter by posting a total score of 198 out of a possible 200.

Dickie Keziah, manager of physical plant services, points out that the employees in the photo are wearing new safety sunglasses, which they received for winning the award. “The gift is most appropriate for these employees since they are exposed to airborne objects from mowers and other equipment during the performance of their daily responsibilities,” said Keziah.
