October 15 Update from the Ready & Resilient Committee

An update from the Ready & Resilient Committee about an increase in the number of positive COVID-19 cases among the university population.

Members of the Elon community,

Today, as we report 17 new cases, we will break our string of 19 days of cases in the single digits. We are analyzing data from these cases, traced back to social contact without masks, and may see increased numbers from targeted testing tomorrow and next week as we work to further identify cases.

As part of these cases, the Alamance County Health Department will report a cluster of cases associated with East Neighborhood Building A to the state. The close and casual contacts of these cases have already been notified and provided guidance and support. We were pleased to move the campus back to Alert Level I last weekend, but today’s numbers also indicate a possible trend toward Alert Level II within the next several days.

NOW is the time for all of us to act to avoid the rapid surge of cases we experienced in mid-September. If you have tended to relax your personal habits of wearing masks or staying physically distanced, please return to the behaviors we all know are effective in protecting yourself and others. The following simple graph, depicting our fall seven-day case count will demonstrate the importance of this message.

Our goal between now and the end of the semester is to avoid another peak and to “flatten the curve.”

Thank you for doing your part,

Jeff Stein, Ready & Resilient Committee Chair
