Jerry Tolley, director of annual giving and former head football coach at Elon, has published his fourth book of football practice drills. Titled “The Complete Book of Offensive Football Drills,” the book contains detailed, illustrated drills from some of the game’s most well known coaches, including Bobby Bowden, Bud Wilkinson, Frank Broyles, Bear Bryant and Steve Spurrier.
The book includes a foreword from Bowden, head coach at Florida State University, and is dedicated to three coaches who had a profound influence on Tolley’s coaching career—Bill Billings, Tolley’s high school coach at Holmes High School in Edenton, N.C.; Clarence Stasavich, former head coach at East Carolina University, Tolley’s alma mater; and Red Wilson, former head coach at Elon and Duke University.
Tolley, an Edenton, N.C., native who was recently elected to his third term as mayor of the town of Elon, won 49 of his 62 games as Elon’s head coach from 1977-1981, winning NAIA national championships in 1980 and 1981. He received a lifetime membership award from the American Football Coaches Association and was honored with the Laurel Wreath award in 2002, the highest honor given by the State of North Carolina for achievement in athletics. He received the Johnny Vaught Lifetime Achievement Award from the All-America Football Foundation in 2003.
Tolley’s other football books include “101 Winning Football Drills from the Legends of the Game,” “The American Football Coaches Association Guide Book to Championship Football Drills,” and “The Complete Book of Defensive Football Drills.” His books have been sold in all 50 states and several foreign countries.
