The Elon University Department of Performing Arts will present the Black History Month Dance Concert titled “Redemption For Our Skin” on Feb. 26 and 27.
The performance, directed by Assistant Professor of Performing Arts Keshia Wall, will be streamed at Elonperformingarts.com at 7:30 p.m. on each of those days. The Friday, Feb. 26, performance will be followed by a live discussion with a link provided after the show at Elonperformingarts.com.
The dance concert will feature works from globally recognized working artists including North Carolina Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green, Africa Unplugged and Maurice Watson.
Wall offered this note about the performance:
“We have all been navigating the complexities of both a global pandemic and traumas stemming from the horrific acts of violence and injustice towards black people in America. Ensuring the wellness of our students was paramount so with the Ready and Resilient guidelines in mind, we re-directed our focus to a virtual concert.
“The cornerstone of this production, Redemption for Our Skin, lies in challenging the toxic belief systems that reinforce oppression, dismissal, and the dehumanization of Black people. While creating these works, we were met with many challenges related to COVID-19 but decided to use them as fuel to create a beautiful and harmonious production.”
