Scott speaks to Elon students

Former N.C. governor Robert W. Scott told Elon students March 8 that everyone can contribute to society through public service. Details...

Scott spoke following the induction ceremony for the Elon chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society. He said today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders.

“Everyone owes something in public service,” Scott said. “But many people shy away from public service because of criticism, and make no mistake, public service comes with its share of pain and hurt.” Scott urged students to be true to their vision and ideals, and to not look back. “Society today cries out for values, and today’s students bring a set of values to public service that are desperately needed,” Scott said.

An Alamance County native, Scott served a term as North Carolina governor from 1969 to 1973. His administration was marked by a commitment to education, implementing policies which strengthened the state’s public school kindergartens, high school vocational programs and community college system.

Founded in 1992, Sigma Epsilon is Elon’s chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha. To be considered for induction, students must be of junior status and maintain a 3.0 overall grade point average, including a 3.25 GPA in the political science major.
