An essay by Professor Anthony Hatcher was recently featured in The Bitter Southerner, a digital publication focused on telling the stories of the American South.
Titled “Just Past Utopia,” the essay by the chair of the Department of Journalism tells the story of Hatcher’s relationship with his father, with a particular focus on the role the family’s beach house at Topsail Island in North Carolina played in that relationship.
“My father was responsible for one of the worst days of my life. He was also responsible for one of the best,” Hatcher begins. “Both experiences revolved around the perpetually deteriorating beach cottage our family owned for 25 years on Topsail Island, a thin barrier island on the storm-prone North Carolina coast.”
