One of Elon’s most popular stops for coffee has received a new name, thanks to a recent contest among students, faculty and staff. The College Coffee Shop, located on Williamson Avenue adjacent to the Elon campus, will now be known as The Acorn Coffee Shop.
The winning entry, chosen from more than 150 potential names, was submitted by Anne Simpkins, assistant professor of fine arts. Simpkins will receive a $100 credit toward purchases at The Acorn Coffee Shop and other campus dining facilities.
The contest was held in anticipation of Elon’s recent transition to university status. The university logistics committee, which handled various details related to the transition, selected the winning entry. An acorn is prominently featured in Elon’s new logo, which also includes two oak leaves and is symbolic of the oak trees which are prominent on the Elon campus.
