Elon alum to carry Olympic Torch

Bob Lanham, a 1997 Elon graduate, will feed nearly 50,000 people in his role as food and beverage manager for the 2002 Olympic Torch relay--and have a chance to carry the torch as well. Details...

Lanham will manage the details of feeding approximately 800 people each day during the torch’s 65-day, 46-state journey to the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. The relay begins Dec. 4 in Atlanta and culminates Feb. 8 in Salt Lake City.

A native of Mendham, N.J., who lives in Charlotte, Lanham is employed by Campbell-Ewald Co., the advertising agency for Chevrolet. Along with Coca-Cola, Chevrolet is sponsoring the torch relay, which will visit an average of two cities each day. At each stop, Lanham will coordinate lunch or dinner meals for General Motors executives and local Chevrolet dealers and their guests.

Lanham says he doesn’t know when he will get to carry the torch. “All of us who work for Chevy and Coke are standbys, fill-ins,” says Lanham. “I do know that I’ll get to carry the torch; I just don’t know when or where. Knowing me, it’ll probably be at 2:45 in the morning in Idaho!”
