Campus celebrates season with luminaries, carols

Members of the campus and local communities celebrated the holiday season Thursday, Dec. 6 with luminaries and Christmas carols on the Elon campus. Details...

Coordinated by the chaplain’s office, the lighting of luminaries and Christmas caroling is Elon’s traditional way of ushering in the holidays.

The unseasonably warm temperatures couldn’t supress the holiday spirit, as students, faculty, staff and family enjoyed hot chocolate around Fonville Fountain. Members of the Salvation Army band and a volunteer chorus led the crowd in Christmas carols.

Student volunteers, primarily from the freshman and junior classes, worked Thursday to place white paper bags filled with sand. A candle was placed in each bag; a group of about 15 volunteers began lighting the candles about 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The 1,750 luminaries were spaced about a yard apart along the edge of the sidewalks which cross Scott Plaza and Young Commons.
