Students in the Winter Term course “The Business of NASCAR” also got a chance to sit behind the wheel of Mast’s #90 Duke’s Mayonnaise Ford, sponsored by the Sauer Company of Richmond, Va.

Mast joined the Junie Donlavey racing team late in the 2001 season, after regular driver Hut Stricklin left the team. A native of Rockbridge Baths, Va., Mast has started more than 350 Winston Cup Series races, although he is still looking for his first victory. Mast has won the pole during qualifying for four different events, including the inaugural Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis in 1994.

Sauer began working for his great grandfather’s spice and extract company at age 13. A Richmond landmark for years, the company produces vanilla extract, spices and the southern staple Duke’s Mayonnaise.
