Jump rope champs perform for local schoolchildren

Jennifer and Julie Faulk, world jump rope champions and students in Elon's physical therapy program, demonstrated their skills for more than 700 students at Smith Elementary School in Burlington Friday, Feb. 8. Details...

The Faulks began jumping rope in the fifth grade in 1990. The next year, they won the doubles world championship in Double Dutch jump roping in College Park, Md., beginning a five-year run of top five finishes. They won singles titles in 1994 and 1995 and another doubles championship in 1995.

The Faulks also recorded the speed record in singles in 1995, completing 421 jumps in two minutes, a record which still stands today.

Their appearance at Smith Elementary was in conjunction with the start of the Jump for Heart campaign, sponsored by the American Heart Association. Last year, Smith Elementary students raised more than $10,000 by participating in Jump for Heart.

The Marion, S.C., natives graduated from Furman University in 2000, and are in their first year in Elon’s physical therapy program.
