Ellis co-authors book on Kiowa Christians

A new book by Clyde Ellis, associate professor of history, titled "The Jesus Road: Kiowas, Christianity and Indian Hymns," examines Christian faith practices among Oklahoma Kiowas. Details...

Ellis co-authored the book with Luke Eric Lassiter and Ralph Kotay. Published by the University of Nebraska Press, the book shows how Christian members of the Kiowa community have embraced a variety of hymns and made them their own. Ellis’ portion of the book examines how many Kiowas became Christian during the previous century. The book includes a CD containing 26 hymns. Royalties from the book will go to the Cedar Creek Kiowa United Methodist Church in Carnegie, Okla.

This is Ellis’ fourth book since his arrival at Elon in 1994. He is also writing two other books on powwow culture for the University of Nebraska Press and the Kansas University Press.

Ellis is spending the spring semester as the Gordon Russell Visiting Associate Professor in the Native American Studies Program at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. He is teaching a course on Southern Plains powwow culture. He is also conducting seminars on Native American issues in association with his latest book.
