Elon student publishes article in N.C. magazine

Freshman Irene Harvley-Felder's article about one family's tradition of crafting pottery was published in the March 2002 edition of Our State: Down Home in North Carolina magazine. Details...

Harvley-Felder’s article, which appears on pages 54-56, profiles the life and work of the Cole family of Sanford, N.C. Two generations of Coles have spent their lives making pottery. Their work was selected for an exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., in 1982, and some of their pieces remain on permanent display at the Smithsonian.

Harvley-Felder did research for the article during her senior year at Lee Senior High School in Sanford, where she edited the literary magazine. Her article was held for publication in the magazine’s special section on North Carolina arts and crafts.

Harvley-Felder is the daughter of Tom and Zena Harvley-Felder of Sanford. Our State magazine is a monthly publication which chronicles the history, people and places of North Carolina, as well as upcoming events.
