Elon students set to cycle across America

Three Elon University students are making a cross-country trip during their summer vacation, but it isn’t just for fun.

Senior Kevin Burrows and juniors David Henkel and Adam Lentz, members of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, will travel 3,900 miles for the 63-day Journey of Hope, a national project of the fraternity.

The trio will join approximately 70 Pi Kappa Phi brothers from across the country to raise awareness about people with disabilities. Two teams will travel from San Francisco, Calif., to Washington, D.C., on bicycles, stopping in designated cities to present information about disabilities to schools and civic groups. The trip begins June 2 and concludes Aug. 4.

Burrows, from Pittsburgh, Pa., is the first Elon cycler to participate in the event; Henkel, from Roanoke, Va., and Lentz, from Lilburn, Ga., will accompany the bicyclers as assistants. Riding four to five days a week and covering about 75 miles per day, the teams will take different routes to reach Washington. Burrows and Henkel will take the northern route while Lentz travels with the southern team, which will pass through Greensboro on its trek to the nation’s capital.
