Baseball team falls in NCAA tournament opener

Elon dropped a 13-7 decision to East Carolina University in the opening game of the NCAA baseball tournament’s Clemson Regional Friday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, S.C.

The Phoenix, who will face the loser of tonight’s Clemson-Georgia Southern game at 11 a.m., Saturday, trailed 7-0 after six innings. But Elon rallied to tie the game at 7-7, thanks to a solo homer by Wes Miller and a grand slam by Jim Swenson.

However, East Carolina responded with five more runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 12-7 lead, and added another run in the eighth for the final 13-7 margin.
