Elon is hosting four sessions of the Teacher Academy this summer, which are designed to train teachers in a variety of advanced classroom skills. Sessions began June 9 and end July 11.

Each session opens on Sunday evening and runs through Thursday afternoon. About 75 teachers and 15 administrators live on campus in Danieley Center while taking part in the weekly sessions. Teams of 4-6 teachers are selected from each school, after an evaluation and selection process by the Teacher Academy in Durham. Teachers receive continuing education credit and a $400 stipend for completing a session.

Elon is hosting three sessions titled “English Language Learners,” which helps teachers learn strategies for working with students who do not speak English. A single session dealing with technology is also scheduled.

The NC Teacher Academy has used Elon as one of five sites for the sessions each year since 1994. Jackie Wooten, the Elon site manager and a Pitt County teacher for 32 years before her retirement, says Elon offers a wealth of benefits for the academy. “It’s a natural to host the academy here, especially with Elon’s great teacher education program. Our teachers are always treated with respect.” Wooten says Elon consistently ranks among the top venues in the academy’s annual site evaluations.
