Leadership Elon explores strategic plan

On Sept. 7, 21 members of the Elon community participated in a day-long seminar to gain a deeper understanding of the NewCentury@Elon strategic plan. Details…

The seminar, called Leadership Elon, was intended to inform trustees, alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff and friends of the university about goals and strategies of the plan. Participants were asked to become advocates for Elon’s growth and development, and spread the word about efforts to establish Elon as a national model of engaged learning.

A pilot session of Leadership Elon was held last spring and another session is scheduled for November.

President Leo M. Lambert hosted a Friday evening dinner, outlining Elon’s remarkable progress and engaging the group in a discussion about indicators of quality that have been achieved.

On Saturday, Susan Klopman, dean of admissions and financial planning, reviewed facts about the new freshman class and detailed admissions trends.

Provost Gerald Francis, along with Stephen House, dean of Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences, and Russell Gill, Maude Sharpe Powell professor of English, discussed the NewCentury@Elon goal of enhancing academic excellence. Plans to secure a Phi Beta Kappa chapter as well as accreditation for the business and communications schools were detailed.

Participants also had the opportunity to learn about engaged learning through sessions led by faculty members Sharon Spray, Tim Peeples and Bill Webb. The engaged learning sessions were facilitated by students Matt Leckenbusch, Chris Young, Jennifer Chewning, Michelle Pautz, Meg Cowley, Will Duffy, Chris Jordan and Jaime McGovern.

Gerald Whittington, vice president for business, finance and technology, explored plans for new facilities as well as issues related to the university’s current resources.
