Bracelets remember victims of Sept. 11

Members of the Elon community can make their own remembrance bracelet in Moseley Center. The bracelets honor the memories of those who died in last year's terrorist attacks. Details...

Students, faculty and staff can visit the Remembrance Resource Room, located in the Fireplace Lounge in Moseley Center, adjacent to Octagon Cafe. Several students stopped by the room around lunchtime Monday, Sept. 9 to make bracelets.

A notebook containing names and brief profiles of every victim is available. In addition, a copy of the New York Times book “Portraits: 9/11/01” is available, offering a more detailed profile of each victim’s life, career and family.

Kristi Johnson, a junior from Lexington, N.C., made a bracelet bearing the name of Lashawana Johnson, a single mother of three who died in the World Trade Center. “Obviously, we had the same last name, but the fact that she was raising three children as a single mother just made me want to do something to honor her,” Johnson said. “I wonder about her kids, too, and how they’re doing.”

For Dave Jenkins, a freshman from Ramsey, N.J., the memory of last Sept. 11 and learning about the terrorist attacks just 20 minutes from his home is still fresh. “I was at school, and the girl sitting right behind me got up and started crying because her father worked at the World Trade Center. He made it out okay.”

But Jenkins was still affected by the death of Donald Gregory, a Ramsey resident and the father of two personal friends. He selected Gregory’s name for his bracelet. “I’m far away from home this year, so (the bracelet) gives me a little connection to home.”

The resource room will remain open throughout the week. For a listing of victims, visit the Web site below:
