The university will offer a wide array of events and activities throughout the month of May in celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage.
Please join members of the Elon University community in celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month during April with a wide range of events and activities.
AAPI Heritage Month is typically celebrated in the United States in May to commemorate the achievements and contributions of people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent in the United States. In 1978, Congress passed a joint Congressional Resolution to celebrate Asian American Heritage Week during the first 10 days of May. This date was chosen because two important anniversaries fall during this time: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in the United States on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad by many Chinese laborers on May 10, 1869.
In 1990, President George H. W. Bush and Congress voted to expand the celebration, and since 1992, May has been designated as AAPI Heritage Month. Because students and faculty are preparing for final exams and commencement activities, the CREDE is following a common practice of celebrating AAPI Heritage Month during the month of April.

April 1
- Shang Chi Movie Showing: Join APSA and Unity in Communications for a trivia and movie night with refreshments. The trivia begins at 7 p.m. and the movie at 8 p.m. in Turner Theater.
- Holi Celebration: Join the Truitt Center for a Celebration of Holi, featuring a dance presentation and panel by Surtal. 4-6 p.m. Truitt Center
April 5
- Soccer in Asia: The symbiotic relationship between Asia’s impact on soccer and vice versa will be examined during a lunchtime lecture from former MLS employee and current Elon professor Chris Rayis. The stories of soccer in Asia and the Pacific Islands are epic, but generally unknown in the West. 11 p.m. to midnight, CREDE Moseley 221
- University Speaker Series presents Belle Liang. A professor of counseling psychology in the Lynch School of Education and Human Development at Boston College, Belle Liang’s research explores positive youth development. 7:30 p.m. in Whitley Auditorium
April 6
- Bulgogi Cooking Night: iMedia graduate student Doo Lee will be leading the event in collaboration with APSA and Oaks Neighborhood. 6-7:30 p.m. in the Oaks Clubroom.
April 8
- International Festival: This year’s theme explores individual well-being across cultures while also considering the well-being of the planet today and into the future. Our investigations will extend into global dimensions of wellness, specifically inviting non-White understandings of wellness. 4-6 p.m. Global Neighborhood.
April 10
- Khmer New Year with APSA: Join APSA in celebrating Khmer New Year. They will be traveling to Wat Greensboro, a Buddhist temple. Transportation will be provided for students. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Contact APSA for more information.

- Ramen Tasting Party: Come to APSA’s popular spicy ramen tasting party. 6-7 p.m. in Moseley Kitchen.
April 12
- K-pop ” Best of the Best”: Come & join the super fun night of fighting for the K-Pop Best as we play K-pop Brackets! Come fight for your favorites! 6-7 p.m. in Moseley 221. Snacks provided!
April 13
- Sri Lankan New Year: Sri Lanka is a country that is dazzling in its beauty, history, and cultural complexity. The two main ethnic groups on the island (the Tamils and the Sinhalese) each maintain unique linguistic and cultural traditions that exist nowhere else in the world. These two groups also share many commonalities, including the New Year’s holiday, which is widely celebrated by both the Sinhalese and Tamil people. On the eve of the New Year, students and community members will have the opportunity to experience food and activities that are traditionally a part of celebrations in Sri Lanka. Join us on Medallion Plaza (rain location: upstairs Lakeside), 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.. Authentic Sri Lankan dishes will also be on the lunch menu in Lakeside Dining Hall on Tuesday, April 12 and Wednesday, April 13.

- History of Henna: Join EMPRESS in learning about the history of Henna. 7:30 p.m. in Upstairs Lakeside.

- Chai Chat x Jewelry Making: Join GLC and CREDE for a QTPOC Chai Chat and Jewelry making! Location TBD

- Vietnamese Spring Roll: Join APSA in cooking a favorite Adian dish 6-7 p.m. in Moseley Kitchen.

- Surtal Spring Showcase: Surtal will be performing at 6 and 8 p.m. on April 22 and 6 p.m. on April 23 at Yeager Recital Hall.
April 27
- AAPI End of Year Celebration: Join us for the AAPI End of Year Celebration where we honor AAPI students, faculty, and staff. 5:30-7:15 pm in Upstairs Lakeside. Registration required.
