Homecoming Reunion Weekend activities on the Elon campus continued Saturday, Nov. 9 with campus tours, the presentation of Alumni Association awards, tailgating before the football game and the Elon Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Details...

Unseasonably warm temperatures made it a perfect Saturday morning for alumni to tour campus and tailgate in various campus locations before the Phoenix football team hosted Liberty University at Rhodes Stadium.

The morning started with a breakfast hosted by Chaplain Richard McBride, followed by walking tours of campus. At a mid-morning Alumni Association gathering in Whitley Auditorium, alums heard a campus update from President Leo M. Lambert and honored several of their own with the presentation of the annual Alumni Association Awards. Click here to read about this year’s award recipients.

For the second straight year, the November weather was perfect for enjoying a tailgate lunch with friends and former classmates. On The Green, beside Lake Mary Nell and in parking lots around campus, alumni gathered to enjoy a pre-game meal of chicken, barbecue, burgers and just about every other kind of food imaginable. The festivities were punctuated by the Fire of the Carolinas, Elon’s marching band, as it made a pre-game sweep through campus.

Elon’s football game against Liberty University also provided the backdrop for a special reunion of marching band alumni from the 1960s and 1970s. Nearly 30 marching band alumni brought their instruments and played with Elon’s new marching band, “The Fire of the Carolinas,” in a special tribute to former band director Jack White. White earned acclaim for his work with both the “Emanons” and “Showband of the Carolinas” during his stint as director from 1962-1986.

Halftime ceremonies included recognition of six new inductees into the Elon Sports Hall of Fame and the presentation of the Homecoming Court.

Homecoming fun was scheduled to continue Saturday evening with a reunion of professors and former students and the Alumni Gala party in Moseley Center. Activities conclude on Sunday with a worship service at the Elon Community Church, campus tours and a volleyball match against Troy State University.
