Students work to combat hunger

A number of Elon students donated time, food and unused dining hall meals during the week of Nov. 18 to combat world hunger. Details...

More than 400 students signed up to donate the equivalent of one dining hall meal from their meal plan to benefit Oxfam America’s World Harvest Fast. Approximately $1,500 will be donated by Aramark, Elon’s food service provider, to Oxfam. Participating students agreed to skip one of their meals in the dining hall to help the program.

More than 80 students participated in a 30-hour famine. Students gave up all food from 1 a.m., Friday, Nov. 22 until 7 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 23. About 35 students took part in a sleepover in The Zone during the final hours of the famine, reflecting on the experience while gaining a new understanding of what many people throughout the world face daily.

About a dozen students volunteered at a soup kitchen sponsored by Allied Churches of Alamance County. They helped prepare and serve an early afternoon meal.

Finally, a campus-wide food drive gathered nearly 600 items for Allied Churches’ food pantry during the holidays. Students from Elon Elementary School also took part, donating five truckloads of food.
