The redesign of uniform includes changes in colors for shirts, patches.
Officers with Elon Campus Safety and Police will shift to a new uniform design this week featuring black shirts and different colors of patches to denote different ranks within the department.
The campus police department has used a gray shirt-black pants uniform for approximately 15 years but will shift the color of their shirts to create an all-black uniform. Black or blue uniforms are traditionally worn by local police, where other colors may be used by local Sheriff’s offices. The change not only has better functionality, but the department has also learned that black/blue uniforms are most common and have better availability in a supply chain world.
Members of the department will now have either gold-trimmed patches or silver-trimmed patches on their uniforms. Gold will be worn by sergeants and above to denote supervisory officers and silver will be worn by corporals and officers. The shoulder patch design is also distinctly different than the Town of Elon Police. Shoulder patches, vehicles and badges are the best way to differentiate the two departments, said Chief of Campus Safety and Police Joseph LeMire.
