Lisa Buchanan co-authored article for the 'Social Studies and the Young Learner' journal on teaching topics of war to elementary aged children.

Lisa Buchanan, associate professor of education

Lisa Buchanan, associate professor of education in the Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education, has co-authored an article for classroom teachers on teaching topics of war with elementary-aged children with colleague Elizabeth Bellows, associate professor of education at Appalachian State University.

The article, “Approaching the Teaching of War in the Elementary Classroom with Text Sets,” begins with an overview of teaching war with elementary students, discusses available resources for teaching war and identifies the gaps in resources, and then guides the reader through how to curate a text set of picture books with themes related to war.

A comprehensive overview of suggested picture books is also provided. The article is published in the flagship elementary social studies journal for the National Council for the Social Studies, “Social Studies and the Young Learner.”
