Catherine King, associate professor of psychology, was interviewed for a story about children’s self-esteem which aired Wednesday, Feb. 19 on WGHP-TV’s 10 p.m. newscast.
King was interviewed by reporter Bob Buckley about the apparent inability some people have to judge their own talents and abilities. Using recent episodes of the television show “American Idol,” Buckley’s story questions whether some parents, in an effort to protect their childrens’ self-esteem, are not being totally honest with their kids about their talents. Several of the performers on the show thought they were good singers, when it was obvious they were not.
King discussed the history of the self-esteem movement in child psychology, and also answered Buckley’s questions about proper ways to reinforce self-esteem in kids.
A shorter version of the story also aired during the station’s morning newscast on Wednesday.
