A standout member of Elon's track and field team, George is an Honors Fellow and a Lumen Scholar at Elon and is a recipient of the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship, among other honors.
Elon women’s track and field standout Madison George ’23 has been chosen as the 2022-23 CAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year presented by Primis following a vote of the Colonial Athletic Association’s Academic Affairs Committee.
George has excelled academically at Elon, compiling a 4.0 grade point average while majoring in engineering with a biomedical concentration. She has been a member of the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll, the Elon President’s List and the Elon Athletic Director’s Honor Roll during all seven semesters she has completed thus far. An Honors Fellow, George received the A.L. Hook Scholar-Athlete Award for achieving the highest grade point average among upper-class student-athletes.
She has been heavily involved in undergraduate research while at Elon and is a recipient of the university’s Lumen Prize, which awarded her $20,000 to further research into making the first 3D-printed pole vault spikes for women. George was also named a 2022 Goldwater Scholarship recipient, becoming one of only 417 students nationally to be recognized. In March, George became the first Elon student to be chosen for the highly selective NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program, a collaborative endeavor between the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.K. universities Oxford and Cambridge.
She has earned induction to the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Pi Mu Epsilon Honor Society and Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society.
On the track, George has been a member of Elon squads that have captured the past two CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships as well as the 2023 CAA Indoor Track & Field Championship. She earned All-CAA accolades outdoors in 2021 after placing third in the pole vault and was fifth in the event last year. At this year’s indoor championship, George finished in a tie for fourth in the pole vault. A team captain, she tied Elon’s outdoor school record in the pole vault and was just a centimeter shy of the indoor mark.
George, who serves as an Elon representative on the CAA SAAC group, was a recipient of the CAA Leadership and Sports Excellence Award for women’s track and field last June. She has participated in numerous community service initiatives. George will be pursuing a doctorate in bioengineering at Stanford University after graduating from Elon in May.
In honor of her accomplishment, George will receive a $1,000 stipend along with a crystal award. Each of the 13 nominees for the CAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year presented by Primis will be recognized with a crystal award.
