In an essay published by the Greensboro News & Record on Dec. 22, 2023, Director of Project Pericles and Professor of Psychology Mathew Gendle argues that additional transparency is required regarding a facility in Greensboro that will eventually house up to 800 unaccompanied migrant children. When at capacity, this complex will likely serve as the largest housing facility for unaccompanied minors in the U.S.
In this work, Gendle also presses readers to consider broader questions regarding the role of private contractors in administering government migrant facilities. Is it ethical to place for-profit companies in charge of Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) influx sites? How can the public ensure that the primary interest of these contractors remains with the welfare of the children, and not profiteering from a system that produces ongoing multi-million dollar government service contracts? Collectively, these concerns underscore the very real need for enhanced transparency, monitoring, and public oversight for all ORR influx facilities.
