The sorority regularly supports those with Alzheimer's through its partnership with Blakey Hall and fundraising efforts.
Sigma Kappa is a sorority organization on Elon’s campus whose main philanthropy focus is Alzheimer’s awareness. The sisters of Sigma Kappa have created a meaningful relationship with Blakey Hall, a retirement home that houses individuals with Alzheimer’s.
Every sister goes to Blakey Hall at least once a semester, and a lot go multiple times. While at Blakey Hall, the sisters interact with the residents by doing crafts, puzzles, bingo, going on walks and even participating in their physical therapy. Sigma Kappa sisters have created bonds with the residents.
“Despite the fact that not every sister has a direct connection to Alzheimer’s, visiting Blakey Hall has allowed everyone in the chapter to become emotionally attached to someone affected by memory loss, giving everyone a push to raise more money to help fight this disease. We first became connected by our sisters’ connections, and it has grown into loving and caring about the residents at Blakey Hall,” said Katie Sweeney, vice president of philanthropy for Sigma Kappa.
The relationship between Sigma Kappa and Blakey Hall has made a positive impact on the Burlington community. In addition to serving at Blakey Hall, the sisters raise money every year for the Alzheimer’s Association. They host the Walk to End Alzheimer’s every fall in Burlington that in 2023 raised $41,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association.
