As election season ramps up and artificial intelligence tools become even more powerful, some bad actors are tapping into these new technologies to produce increasingly believable fake websites designed to deceive or scam.
There’s been an increase in suspicious domain registrations related to former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, with many seeking to solicit campaign donations that likely never land in the coffers of candidates, national news outlet NewsNation reports.
Lee Rainie, director of the Imagining the Digital Future Center at Elon, explained to NewsNation reporter Andrew Dorn that the speed and scalability of these technologies are giving scammers major advantages this campaign season. Earlier this year, the center released the results of a survey showing that 78 percent of Americans think AI abuses will impact the outcome of the presidential election.
“When you can do it so easily, with so little effort, you can do a lot of it,” Rainie told NewsNation.
