WRAL features Ghanaian journalist’s Olympics coverage, Elon beginnings

Fentuo Tahiru spent his senior year at Elon before graduating from the University of Ghana. He is one of that nation’s leading sports broadcasters and was featured by Raleigh, North Carolina’s WRAL this week.

Fentuo Tahiru — one of Ghana’s most prominent sports broadcasters and covering his first Olympic Games — was recently featured on WRAL for beginning his career at Elon.

Tahiru is lead sports editor for The Multimedia Group Limited, Ghana’s largest media company, and hosts radio and television programs while overseeing sports content across the company’s platforms. He is one of two Ghanaian broadcasters accredited to cover the 2024 Olympics — a lifelong dream.

“I’m not just reporting,” Tahiru said to WRAL. “I’m also an ambassador for my country because there’s not a lot of us here. So, it’s just me, and I have to use every small opportunity I get to tell people about my country in Paris.”

Tahiru graduated from the University of Ghana in 2010 with degrees in English and Psychology and received a scholarship to attend Elon for his senior year. At the time, his alma mater didn’t have a journalism program, and Elon is where he took his first journalism courses and worked one of his first radio jobs — at WSOE. Along with several courses in the School of Communications, Tahiru completed his English and psychology studies in Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences.

After graduation, he taught school while interning nightly at a radio station. A rival station eventually offered him a full-time job. His career and profile have risen since, covering FIFA World Cups and other athletic championships and events around the world. He has been a sports editor at the Multimedia Group Limited since 2022.

“Elon was a life-changing experience for me,” Tahiru said recently in an interview with Elon. “The connections I made there were strong, and Elon gave me more confidence in myself that fueled my desire to chase my dream of sports broadcasting.”
