The School of Communications welcomed its 2009 Journalism and Communications Fellows to Elon last week. Thirty-two top students accepted invitations to join the Fellows program.

Senior cinema major Max Cantor had his documentary "Cinema 93" selected for screening at the 2009 New Hampshire Film Festival Oct. 15-18 in Portsmouth, N.H.

From the Winston-Salem Journal (9/6/09): The Arts Council of Winston-Salem hopes to grab a $1.2 million grant from a national foundation, but needs $1 million from Forsyth County, Winston-Salem and other government sources of money to get the money.

The Pendulum, Elon University's weekly student newspaper, was named a 2009 finalist in the Associated Collegiate Press Newspaper Pacemaker competition Sept. 4. Pacemaker is the highest honor ACP gives to its members.

Junior journalism major Pam Richter was named a national finalist in the Online Opinion and Commentary category of Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence awards competition. She collected her award at SPJ’s national convention Aug. 28 in Indianapolis.

The North Carolina Association of Broadcasters gave School of Communications Associate Dean Connie Book an award for outstanding leadership and dedication to the NCAB.

From the Rhino Times (9/3/09): On the afternoon of Tuesday, Sept. 1 – after a lot of talk by President Barack Obama about transparency in his administration – I snuck into and attended a private meeting held by Obama's deputy secretary of the US Department of the Treasury, Neal Wolin, and Democratic Rep. Brad Miller, who represents North Carolina's 13th congressional district. Also at the meeting were state and federal banking officials, area elected officials and a select group of other handpicked attendees.
