From the Smoky Mountain News (11/26/08): A private meeting has been scheduled between the N.C. Department of Transportation and elected leaders to discuss the controversial Southern Loop — a move that seems headed toward a violation of the N.C. Open Meetings Law.

From the Charlotte Observer (11/24/08): Public officials are permitted to meet in private. But their discussions don't have to stay that way, according to state law.

It was the ultimate post-election trip for 10 students from the two journalism groups at Elon University. The students from the Elon chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and the Radio & Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) toured major Washington, D.C., news outlets and other media sites the week before Thanksgiving. The media tour was sponsored by SPJ, RTNDA and the School of Communications.

The North Carolina Open Government Association will hold its board meeting from noon-2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at Elon University.

Elon University Commmunications students Shea Northcut and Laura Beth Ward were awarded a Harold Fellows Scholarship from the Broadcast Education Association this week.

The dean and two faculty members in the School of Communications have authored a chapter that appears in the 2009 edition of the book "Global Journalism: Topical Issues and Media Systems."
