The human rights crisis experienced in Nicaragua during 2018 was the main topic of discussion at an expert forum at Elon.

Concern about the growing opioid epidemic prompted the Elon community to organize the forum as a way to educate students, faculty and staff.

Elon was a partner in the conference, which focused on learning about and lifting the souls of black and brown women and girls. The event was held at Shaw University in partnership with the Raleigh/Apex chapter of the NAACP. 

After the "Taking Kids: Border Madness" Teach-in was convened by Columbia University School of Social Work early this year, California State University Monterey Bay School of Social Work invited Assistant Professor Carmen Monico to visit its campus in October as an expert speaker.

Elon faculty & students attended the Forced Migration Institute, presenting and participating in discussions on current refugee and immigrant policies

Carmen Monico, an assistant professor of human service studies, was among thousands of scholars from around the world who attended and presented at the XIX World Congress of Sociology held in July in Canada.

Students, faculty, staff and community partners have united to develop and promote bystander intervention to prevent sexual violence at Elon, with students offered the opportunity to lead campus conversations.

During winter 2017, College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) faculty partnered to educate students on sexual assault, child abuse, human trafficking and women offenders and to collaborate with community organizations. Outreach activities were supported by a Health Promotion Mini-Grant and the CAS Small Enhancement Grant.
