Three faculty members and six undergraduate researchers from the Department of Biology represented Elon University at the N.C. Academy of Science conference at the University of North Carolina Wilmington on March 22-23, 2019.

Assistant Professor of Biology Jen Hamel and biology major Alina Iwan ’19 co-authored a research presentation for the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Annual Interns & Fellows Symposium in Panama City, Panama.

Assistant Professor of Biology Jen Hamel co-authored a research presentation for the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology Conference in Tampa, FL.

The asssistant professor of biology is a co-investigator on a project titled "The new buzz: AI-powered acoustic monitoring of insect communities to advance conservation of tropical rainforests," being funded by the National Geographic Society (NGS) and Microsoft. 

The grant will allow Biology major Alina Iwan '19 to travel to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama in 2019 to continue a faculty mentored research project. 

Assistant Professor of Biology Jen Hamel and current Elon student Alina Iwan '19 co-authored a research presentation for the 2nd International Symposium on Biotermology in Riva del Garda, Italy.

Assistant Professor Jen Hamel's co-authors on the peer-reviewed research article include three recent Elon graduates who contributed to the study as part of their undergraduate research experiences.
