Governor Beverly Perdue has appointed Brenda Hill Pollard, a member of Elon's board of visitors, to the advisory commission for the N.C. State Museum of Natural Sciences.

Jerry Tolley, head football coach emeritus at Elon, recently published his sixth book of football drills. The Complete Book of Football Tackling Drills offers detailed, illustrated instructions from some of the college football's most renowned coaches, including Ohio State's Jim Tressel, Alabama's Nick Saban, Texas' Mack Brown and Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer, among many others.

Tom Parham and Jerry Tolley will be among seven accomplished figures this spring to make up the 2011 class to the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. Parham, who led Elon men's tennis program for nearly two decades and briefly coached the women's team, and Tolley, a celebrated Elon football coach, will be enshrined at a May 12 ceremony in the North Raleigh Hilton Hotel. Both men won NAIA national championships during their Elon careers.

Housing Works, a nonprofit organization that is working to end AIDS and homelessness, dubbed Britten GInsburg Pund '06 a 2010 "Renegade to Celebrate" in its annual list of "AIDS Heroes and Villains."

Jack Staley '83 has been promoted to supervisor of field operations for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission's Division of Law Enforcement. Staley will oversee more than 200 officers in District 5, which includes Alamance, Rockingham, Orange, Granville, Durham, Person, Caswell, Randolph, Chatham, Lee and Guilford Counties.

Though the United States was ultimately not selected to be a host for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup, it can't be said that Elon alumni didn't do their part to bring the international soccer tournament to America. Guilford County (N.C.) Schools named Garriot Rose '96 principal of Northeast Guilford High School effective Dec. 15.

On Thursday evening, students, faculty and staff, and members of the community braved some of the coldest weather of the season to enjoy one of Elon's most beloved traditions: the annual Holiday Celebration and lighting ceremony on Scott Plaza.

Former Phoenix standouts Terrell Hudgins and Andre Campbell will take a step toward their professional football dreams in 2011, signing contracts to play in arena football leagues. Hudgins has signed with the Chicago Rush of the Arena Football League. Campbell will join the defensive line of the Columbus (Ga.) Lions of the Southern Indoor Football League.
