American writer and historian Timothy Tyson, author of the nationally acclaimed book Blood Done Sign My Name, recently adapted into a feature film, will be the featured speaker at Elon Law's third annual Diversity Day on Saturday, February 27, beginning at 9 a.m.

Commenting on a U.S. magistrate decision that a high school student who posted critical comments about her teacher on Facebook is protected under the First Amendment, Elon Law professor Scott Gaylord explained in news interviews that schools were working to find a balance between protecting free speech and preventing speech that is threatening or inciting dangerous behavior.

Department of Commerce, from 2002-2006, spoke to Elon Law students about the accession of China to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the requirements demanded by the United States in those negotiations.

In the Spring 2009 edition of the John Marshall Journal of Computer and Information Law, Elon Law's Catherine Dunham, professor and associate dean for academic affairs, and Steve Friedland, professor and director of Elon Law's Center for Engaged Learning in the Law, co-authored "Portable Learning for the 21st Century Law School: Designing a New Pedagogy for the Modern Global Context."

Hasina I. Lewis, a member of the Class of 2012 at Elon Law, published an article entitled "Cultivating Diversity in the Law School Classroom," featured in the January edition of the Law Student Division Bulletin of the North Carolina Bar Association.

Tom and Karen Armstrong, longtime supporters of Elon University's study abroad and service learning programs, recently contributed gifts in support of the law school's Wills Clinic and its veterans scholarship fund.

Franklin McCain, one of the NC A&T students who energized the civil rights movement in 1960 by sitting at a segregated lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C., was the featured speaker at Elon Law's second annual Martin Luther King, Jr. forum on January 14.

Due to continued icy roads and the aftermath of the weekend snowstorm, Elon University School of Law will close at 9 p.m. on Monday, February 1, and will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 2.
