Elon’s oldest graduate died February 2 at age 106.

The Hon. Barron L. Thompson L’09 pledged Monday to support the U.S. and state constitutions and administer justice without favoritism as a North Carolina District Court judge in a ceremonial swearing-in led by the Hon. Sarah Neely Lanier L’10.

Julianna Kober’s efforts to help digitize hundreds of pre-Civil War bills of sale of people enslaved in Greensboro, North Carolina, and nearby communities earned her Elon University School of Law’s top honor for embodying the highest levels of selfless leadership and service.

Led by a matching gift from an anonymous donor, Elon Law’s Class of 2020 expanded a student emergency fund and sponsored a memorial that will celebrate the legacy of Dean Emeritus George R. Johnson, Jr.

Graduates in Elon Law’s Class of 2020 were recognized in an online program with school and professional honors for advocacy, legal writing and research, academic excellence, and excellence in service.

“One does one's best work where one is really engaged and committed.” Dean Emeritus George R. Johnson, Jr. praised Elon Law students and graduates while reflecting on his contributions to legal education in a video conversation recorded weeks before his passing. 

Kernodle, a recipient of the Elon Medallion for his service to the university, passed away Saturday, Sept. 26, at the age of 102.

As attorneys for the North Carolina General Assembly, Luke Gillenwater L’11 and Jeremy Ray L’11 assisted state lawmakers this spring with bipartisan legislation aimed at countering the economic and public health damage caused by COVID-19.

Led by graduates from the Class of December 2019, the most recent volume of the Elon Law Review features articles and commentaries on topics that include the U.S. Supreme Court, assessments for measuring student learning in law school, and the politicization of the American judiciary.

Elon Law Dean Luke Bierman invited law school students, faculty and staff to reflect on the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth - and then "put into action today’s cause for remembrance" - in an email delivered to the community on June 19, 2020.
