Assistant professor of art Young Kim was profiled by the News & Record in Greensboro, N.C., in a Jan. 3 feature section cover story on his photography and exhibits using salt and sand.

"Civilization," a sculpture by former Elon scholar-in-residence Ahmed Fadaam, was installed on the portico of the Arts West building Thursday afternoon in an event that included a live question-and-answer discussion with the artist from his home in Baghdad.

Michael Fels, associate professor of art, and Rick Earl, technical director for Cultural and Special Programs, are exhibiting collaborative painting machines at Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Young Kim dropped small lights from the rafters of a vacant office near downtown Grand Rapids to illuminate the dozens of salt and clay portraits he created on the ground below, but when his work fell short in the public voting of a Michigan art contest billed as “the largest in the world,” fans of the Elon University assistant professor turned to Twitter – and their efforts proved the power of social media.
