Service opportunities, gatherings and other special programs at Elon during January will commemorate the legacy of the late civil rights leader.

Josephine Gardner, a public health studies major from Maine, has received the Samuel Huntington Public Service Award to grow a nonprofit she founded to empower low-income women in Ethiopia. 

More than two dozen Elon University students and one staff member were recognized for their leadership at an awards program sponsored by Omicron Delta Kappa.

The daylong event puts the spotlight on cutting edge undergraduate research through poster and oral presentations around Elon's campus. 

In her visit to Elon Law for a Distinguished Leadership Lecture, Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas called for renewed pride in the United States as part of a larger strategy to address social and economic woes that have led to today's political climate.

Ranked by Forbes magazine as one of the world's 100 most powerful women, Kay Bailey Hutchison, an influential Republican leader who represented Texas for two decades on Capitol Hill, visits Elon Law in Greensboro on April 13 for a 6:30 p.m. program that is free and open to the public.

This is one of a series of programs designed to enhance civic engagement efforts on campus. The series is supported by the Elon Political Engagement Work Group and Elon Votes!

Elon students, faculty and staff will gather in the Moseley Center First Floor on Friday, Jan. 20, to watch coverage of the presidential inauguration.
