The Pendulum, Elon's weekly student newspaper, and Phoenix14News, Elon's weekly student newscast were honored March 27 with Mark of Excellence Awards at the Society of Professional Journalists Region 2 competition in College Park, Md.

Communications associate professor Jessica Gisclair and AmeriCorps Vista staff member Rebekkah Goodman-Williams spent spring break with 15 Elon students on a weeklong service trip to the gulf coast of Mississippi, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005.

Janna Quitney Anderson, associate professor of communications and director of the School of Communication's Imagining the Internet Center, has been named to the Futurists Advisory Board for the Lifeboat Foundation.

Professor Tom Arcaro and associate professor Anthony Hatcher co-authored a column on atheism for the March 28, 2010, Sunday "Ideas" section of the News & Record in Greensboro, N.C.

Rebecca Smith, a sophomore journalism major and features editor of The Pendulum student newspaper, was one of nine students nationwide to be selected for a Scripps Howard Foundation 10-day journalism study trip to Japan in its annual Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition.

Tony Weaver, assistant professor in the Department of Leisure and Sport Management, presented to members of the Lumina Foundation last week in Indianapolis. The presentation, "The Cost of College Athletics," examined current trends in Division I athletic spending.

Live Oak Communications, Elon's student-run, full-service communications agency, is seeking qualified applicants for the fall of 2010. Live Oak develops and executes communications programs for businesses and not-for-profit organizations in the North Carolina region.

Public records are just that--public. Every citizen is entitled to view records of an arrest warrant and go to certain government meetings--and they should be allowed to do so. Protecting and celebrating these rights is what the Sunshine Center and the North Carolina Open Government Coalition does annually during its Sunshine Day events.
