New web page shares information on Haitian relief efforts

Elon University has created a new web page for the campus community to share news and information on outreach efforts following the January 12, 2010, earthquake that killed more than 100,000 people in Haiti. The page, www.elon.edu/haiti, lists fundraising events, updates and awareness campaigns sponsored by student organizations, classes and individuals at the university.

Many students, faculty and staff at Elon University have expressed concern for the people of Haiti following a massive earthquake on Tuesday that killed tens of thousands and devastated much of the Caribbean nation. A current student and a 2009 alum on the ground in Haiti have made contact with their families in the United States, while another two current students and other alumni have started hearing from their own relatives still in the country.

More than 600 students are studying abroad over Winter Term, and the Isabella Cannon Centre for International Studies is hosting a blog for parents and friends to stay up-to-date on experiences taking place in nations such as China, South Africa and Greece.
Elon books headed to University of Ghana library

About 2,500 books donated by Elon students faculty and staff are headed to the library at the University of Ghana. The book drive was coordinated by Brian Digre, professor of history and leader of Elon's Ghana Winter Term program.

Elon University is celebrating International Education Week this week with a series of campus events that include guest speakers, art installations, movie screenings and a food festival. The activities, which run Nov. 16-20, focus on the Middle East, the theme of a 2009 program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education.

Sculpture from Iraqi artist installed at Arts West

"Civilization," a sculpture by former Elon scholar-in-residence Ahmed Fadaam, was installed on the portico of the Arts West building Thursday afternoon in an event that included a live question-and-answer discussion with the artist from his home in Baghdad.
