During the spring of 2011, David M. Crowe, professor of legal history at Elon Law and professor of history at Elon University, presented research at symposia around the country on topics including cultural genocide in Tibet, the application of the American Civil Rights Movement to civil rights advocacy for the Roma of Eastern Europe and Russia, and the evolution of the laws of war. Crowe is the author of Crimes of State, Past and Present: Government-Sponsored Atrocities and International Legal Responses (Routledge, 2010). He taught a winter-term course in January at Elon Law titled War Crimes, Genocide and Justice.

Seventeen law schools and 31 teams of law students participated in the inaugural Billings, Exum & Frye National Moot Court Competition at Elon University School of Law on April 1 and 2. David Gergen, chair of Elon Law's national advisory board, former adviser to four U.S. presidents, CNN senior political analyst, and director of the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School, delivered the keynote address at the competition banquet.

A two-day seminar organized by the faculty, staff and students of the Humanitarian Immigration Law Clinic at Elon Law featured presentations by immigration law scholars and practitioners, law enforcement officials, and leaders of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service. Dozens of non-profit immigration service providers and attorneys specializing in immigration law attended the event.

Elon Law's Sports and Entertainment Law Society hosted a presentation by Ron Katz on April 14. Katz is a partner of the firm Mannatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, in Palo Alto, California. He is the chair of his firm's Sports Law division.

The May 5 edition of the News & Record features Elon University School of Law for its contributions to the economic growth and vitality of downtown Greensboro. The article reports on downtown Greensboro's comparatively strong economic growth indicators, noting Elon's recent purchase of property in the area and the university's plans to expand facilities for the law school.

On May 6, Elon Law professor David Levine presented findings from his article, "The People's Trade Secrets?" at the spring meeting of the Carolina Patent, Trademark & Copyright Law Association. In March, Levine discussed his research on the operation of intellectual property law at the intersection of technology and public life at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, through the Mary Junck Research Colloquium series in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Law scholars William M. Carter, Jr. of Temple University Beasley School of Law, Jacqueline D. Lipton of Case Western Reserve University School of Law, and Frank Pasquale of Seton Hall Law spoke at Elon University School of Law this year through the law school's faculty development lecture series.
