What makes a good leader? As four executives from Elon history – Leo M. Lambert, Earl Danieley, Noel Allen and Chase Rumley – explained Tuesday evening, several answers exist to the question: Optimism, commitment, courage and principle, to name just a few.

A series of events aimed at strengthening personal and organizational leadership begins this week with a discussion by four Elon figures on key moments of leadership as an executive at Elon College and University. The LEADstrong 2009 campaign is sponsored by the Center for Leadership.

On the same day that the first African American took the oath for the nation’s highest office, Elon Leadership Fellows embarked to the Deep South for tour that connected history to the present. Twenty-three students traveled to Alabama and Georgia during Winter Term as part of a course on civil rights and nonviolence.

Wayne Meisel is president of The Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation, which supports scholarships for low-income students at 22 schools in the Southeast and Midwest through the Bonner Scholars Program. In return, each scholarship recipient performs 600 hours of community service a year.
