Allocco will study in Tamil Nadu, India, beginning in summer 2023, documenting the songs, traditions and art forms created by a family of intergenerational pampaikkārar, drummer-priests. The pampaikkārar are unstudied Hindu musicians and ritual specialists.

The Program for Ethnographic Research and Community Studies (PERCS) awarded Hannah Boone '22 and Emily Wilbourne '22 for their outstanding ethnographic research in a ceremony on April 21.

“Bringing the Dead Home: Hindu Invitation Rituals in Tamil South India” is the cover article in the most recent issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Religion

The journal’s double issue, which includes twelve peer-reviewed articles, focuses on the ethnography of India across the longue durée and includes several generations of scholars.

Allocco’s article draws on more than a decade of ethnographic research and interviews with one Hindu family in South India to explore the hermeneutical issues – what Allocco calls “interpretive ambivalence” – that arise from narrative multiplicity.

The chapter is included in a volume that grew out of an April 2018 symposium at Colgate University honoring two of Allocco’s undergraduate mentors.

The Honors student and anthropology major won top honors for his research of Quechua myths in Peru.

Melina Oliverio '16 was named first runner-up for the ASIANetwork's Marianna McJimsey Award, which recognizes top student papers focused on Asia.
