The generous commitment will support new facilities for the university’s STEM programs, a top priority of the Elon LEADS Campaign and the university’s strategic plan.

Researchers from the two universities have made advances in the field of soft robotics by bending artificial cilia into new shapes using a magnetic field, then returning the cilia to their original shape by exposing them to light.

The generous gift from the McMichael Family Foundation, including Elon Trustee Mac McMichael P’99, Life Trustee Gail McMichael Lane P’96 GP’23 and Flavel McMichael Godfrey, will support Elon’s new Innovation Quad, a priority of the Elon LEADS Campaign.

Chris Richardson, associate professor of astrophysics at Elon, and a collaborator at UNC-Chapel Hill will receive the equivalent of $6,000 in computational resources from a National Science Foundation-funded program.

Honors Fellow, engineering major and athlete Madison George '23 set out to design and prototype the first women's pole-vaulting shoe. The support of Elon faculty, staff, teammates and an alumnus has her thinking bigger.
