It takes more than cardboard and trash bags to make a boat that can cross Lake Mary Nell. Mathematics, physics and engineering play a role in the process, too, as scholars in the Elon Academy discovered Thursday afternoon when they set sail across the pond as part of the “Challenges in Engineering” course offered this summer in the academic enrichment program for Alamance County teenagers.

Kamol Jiyankhodjaev will be joining the faculty of the School of Education at Elon University this month as a visiting Fulbright scholar from Uzbekistan. His Fulbright award is a joint appointment with Teacher’s College of Columbia University and the School of Education at Elon University.

“If you’re 7 years old, how many more years before you can come to Elon?” That was one of many questions School of Education Dean David Cooper asked second graders Tuesday at McDougle Elementary School in Carrboro, N.C., when he visited to share stories and information about the university as part of the school’s “go to college” mission.

Thirty-seven portraits of professors and staff in the School of Education were formally unveiled in a Wednesday reception featuring the artist who donated her time to the project.

An original play written by assistant professor Jean Rohr will be performed April 30-May 2, 2010, by the North Carolina Black Repertory Company in Winston-Salem. Members of the company's Teen Theatre Ensemble will bring to life the intricate examination of the educational experience confronting some African-American males today.

Eight students from Cummings High School in Burlington will be earning college credits this spring at Elon University through a program funded by a $10,000 grant from the College Board.
