Elon launches research seminar on writing transfer

Elon University’s Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning has started a two-year research seminar, “Critical Transitions: Writing and the Question of Transfer,” that will explore the composition skills students learn in the classroom and use in new settings, such as an upper level course, an internship or the workplace.

Antonio Izzo and Yuko Miyamoto (Biology Department) presented "Elon's Biology Cabinet: An IT/Faculty partnership in online resource development" at the 2011 Educause Southeast Regional Conference held in Charlotte, NC June 2nd.

The presentation summarized the video production process resulting from a collaboration between the Biology Department and the Teaching and Learning Technology Group at Elon. Four instructional videos that focus on core Biology and Biochemistry lab techniques were produced that are currently being used in lab courses across these programs. The presentation included discussion of the developing model with an audience composed of both teaching faculty and IT staff from other regional colleges and universities.

Christopher Leupold, associate professor of Psychology and program coordinator of Leadership Studies, and Ben McFadyen, academic technology consultant from Teaching and Learning Technologies (TLT) and the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL), presented sessions at the annual Lilly Conference on College and University Teaching in Bethesda, Maryland June 3-5.

Examining our Learning Management System Needs

The Elon University license with Blackboard expires in 2012 and as a result TLT and ATACC are examining the e-Learning requirements for the university to ensure the LMS provides functionality to meet faculty course needs. There has been a substantial movement in higher education toward the adoption of alternative course management systems due to similar functionality, user control, and cost effectiveness.
