Habitat for Humanity

Welcome to Habitat for Humanity at Elon University! Our campus chapter works in affiliation with Habitat for Humanity of Alamance County to raise awareness of housing insecurity and work towards providing affordable housing in Alamance County. Together, we strive to achieve Habitat for Humanity International’s vision: A world where everyone has a decent place to live. And mission: Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

Habitat for Humanity is an international non-profit organization that immediately addresses and combats the lack of affordable housing all over the world. While being a global Christian ministry organization, Habitat values non-discriminatory practice and acceptance regardless of one’s religious faith; people of all faiths and no faith participate as volunteers, donors and partner families. Habitat and our chapter do not proselytize individuals or groups and welcome everyone to join us in our work to provide affordable housing.

Habitat for Humanity History at Elon

Our chapter was chartered in the 1988-89 academic year and was one of the earliest campus chapters to launch around the nation behind Baylor University which started in 1987. We are the first campus chapter that committed to funding and building a Habitat house a year and, this year, we are working on funding and completing our 28th house here in Alamance County.

In 1989, former President Jimmy Carter visited campus and during his visit he promoted Habitat for Humanity. Our chapter expanded and became Elon Volunteers! (EV!) as part of the Chaplain’s Office effort to broaden the areas of service on campus. In addition, the founder of Habitat for Humanity, Millard Fuller, has come to campus twice, in 1995 and 2008.

Get Involved

Here are ways you can get more involved with our chapter:

  • Learn about the issue: Click here to learn more about the need for affordable housing and how Habitat for Humanity is helping
  • Volunteer: We have weekly shifts for people to serve by doing construction work at build sites and helping our in the ReStore. We also have occasional opportunities like neighborhood clean-ups.   • Fundraising: In addition to serving during shifts, our chapter sponsors a house each year so we work to fundraise in support of that sponsorship. We partner with Greek Life at Elon through our Chapters for Change and Stud-a-Thon programs as our primary annual fundraiser to raise money to support our sponsored house each year.
